“A table of appointed scripture readings for the Eucharist and for the daily office throughout the year. The 1979 Book of Common Prayer has two lectionaries: The Eucharistic Lectionary, which provides for reading a substantial amount of the Old Testament and almost all of the New Testament over a three-year cycle; and the daily office lectionary, which allows for three reading each day over a two-year cycle” (Wall, 2000, p.74).

YEAR A begins the three-year cycle of the Eucharistic Lectionary and is on the first Sunday of Advent. The years are broken down into three year intervals.

YEAR A – the gospel reading is usually from Matthew, with John’s Gospel used during used during during the seasons of Lent and Easter.

YEAR B – Second of the three yearly cycles of Eucharistic readings and focusing on the Gospel of Mark, with John’s Gospel for the seasons of Lent and Easter.

YEAR C – Third of the three yearly cycles of Eucharistic readings and focusing on the Gospel of Luke, with John’s Gospel for the seasons of Lent and Easter.

YEAR 1 – Cycle of readings for the daily office that begins on the first Sunday of Advent preceding odd-numbered years and including readings from the Old Testament, psalms, epistles, and gospels. Major feast days have their own appointed psalms and lessons.

YEAR 2 – Cycle of readings for the daily office that begins on the first Sunday of Advent preceding even-numbers and includes readings from Old Testament, psalms, epistles, and gospels. Major feast days have their own appointed psalms and lessons” (Wall, 2000, p.140-141).
